Project - Girl's Scholarships

In Tanzania and other African nations, there is an unfortunate disparity in educational opportunities between boys and girls. Due to limited economic resources, families often cannot afford to send all of their children to school. Girls are much more likely to be pulled from class at a young age to support the family at home. They are also encouraged to marry early and begin their own families, which further decreases their chances of receiving an education or improving their economic prospects.

JGI’s Girls Scholarship Project has been providing girls and women in the Kigoma region of Tanzania with the necessary resources to complete their education since 1998. The recipients are also participants of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Programme, where they are learning about sustainability and the environment. To date,  JGI has assisted 309 girls and counting with their education.

As a result of the girls’ scholarship project, the girls’ parents and guardians actively participate in JGI’s conservation and development programs. In addition to increasing women’s education levels, the scholarship project trains recipients’ families in sustainable farming techniques, as well as forest regeneration and preservation.
